USB Guard is a free software that monitors your computer for connected USB devices. There are two useful implementation of USB Guard that I can think of. One is to prevent accidental shutdown and another one is to remind you not to forget about your USB device. Once installed, you can launch the app to run in background. It monitors all connected USB devices and automatically interrupts the shutdown process if there are still USB devices attached on your computer. You'll be prompted with a warning message. You can either choose to ignore the message (this will prevent the shutdown) or proceed to shutdown, standby or hibernate the system.
You can also configure USB Guard to auto start with Windows logon and manually select the drives which are to be monitored. Just click its icon system tray to display the options menu. It works on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.
