Convert DVD Installer to Bootable Windows 7 USB Flash Drive

Convert DVD Installer to Bootable Windows 7 USB Flash DriveThe most obvious reason to choose USB Flash Drive over DVD disc is because it is more handy and reliable. On the other hand, Discs are bulky, size limited and prone to scratches that can lead to unreadable track. Another challenge is the lack of optical drives on netbooks and some notebook model in the market while most of these gadgets have USB ports. So if you want to create a bootable Windows OS on USB Flash disk from DVD Disc, you can use a portable tool called Koala.

The process is pretty simple, just insert the operating system disc into your optical drive, plug-in your usb thumb drive, run Koala and then Press "Scan" for source, and the tool will read the OS information from the optical disk. Next step is to scan for destination drive by hitting the "Scan" button for Destination. Once your finish selecting the source and destination, hit Start to begin the process.

Koala, USB Flash Disk Windows Installer

The process may last up to 10 minutes, depending on the OS version selected as well as speed and performance of the flash drive. You may also tweak some additional settings through the Settings menu.

Koala can create bootable USB installation drives for Windows 7, Vista, and Server 2008. Koala works on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 2003 Server, Windows 2008 Server and Windows 7.

Hello Fryan,

Great article!

You can download the USB tool for free and copy your Windows 7 ISO to the USB. Complete instructions can be found here:

@John M That's a cool tool but it looks like it only works if you downloaded a Windows 7 iso from the microsoft store or obtained an iso somehow. Koala is great because you can use it with a Win 7 DVD. It would be cool if microsoft would let you link your physical DVD purchase to the Microsoft Store so you can download the software as well, just like Steam does with games.
