Restrict Users To Run Only Specified Applications in Windows 7

Restrict Users To Run Only Specified Applications in Windows 7We recently upgraded our internet cafe's computers to Windows 7 operating system. And for security purposes, we only allow customers to run specific applications such as Microsoft Office applications, browser and etc. To specify a whitelist (safe applications) in Windows 7, you can use the built-in Local Group Policy Editor. Here is a short walktrough that you can follow for restricting users to run only specified applications in Windows 7.

1. Click Start and enter "gpedit.msc" into the search box and hit Enter.
2. From the Group Policy Editor, Browse to User Configuration>Administrative Templates>System. Then under Setting (right pane) scroll down and double click on "Run only specified Windows applications" as shown below.

Run Only Specified Applications In Windows 7

3. Choose the Enabled option from the Policy dialog box then under the Options section click on the Show button.

4. On the Popup Show Contents dialog, type the exe name of the apps you want to allow users to run. Hit OK then close out of Local Group Policy Editor.

Now everytime the user try to run apps not on the whitelist, Windows will prompt for error message.

Thanks, it's really helpful. How about Winexplorer - will they be also blocked to use it?
