Space Sniffer can find lost space on your disks

Space Sniffer can find lost space on your disksIsn't cool if you can see a graphical view of what is occupying your hard drive's space? Yes you can actually see it using a free portable application called Space Sniffer. Start by downloading the app (1.1MB zip file), extract it anywhere, and double click SpaceSniffer exe. It will ask you for the drive to scan, just hit the "Start" button to see the magic. Based on my test, disk scan was quiet fast and it doesn't need too much memory and you can leave it running while doing something else on your computer.

After the scan process, Space Sniffer will display several elements (represents folders and files). The bigger are the elements on the view the bigger space it take on your disk.

check folder and file space on your disk using space sniffer

To see more detail on a big folder? Just single click on it to zoom in. The selected element will be zoom in with its detailed content. If you want to find images that takes too much space then you can use the filter option. For example, you can type "*.jpg" on the filter field and press enter. The view will react and show you only JPEG files. Of course you can filter any type of file. This portable application also supports Windows 7.

How to Map Network Drive in Ubuntu

Unlike on Windows, Ubuntu Linux can't open Windows shared folder using UNC path "\\server\share". Instead you have to access it from a Ubuntu Connect to Server facility. The facility not only supports Windows share, it can also connect to services like FTP, HTTP, HTTPS and URI. The requirements to connect to a Windows shared folder are IP or Hostname of the Windows PC you want to access and a Windows account with sufficient privileges. The following is the step-by-step procedure to get a Windows shared folder.

1. From Ubuntu Menu, Go to Places > Connect to Server...
2. On the Connect to Server dialog, Select "Windows share" from service type dropdown list.
3. Enter the IP address or host name of the Windows machine in Server field.

By now, you should be able to see the File Browser containing all Windows shared folders on the current machine. Take note that Ubuntu may ask for your Windows account password when authentication is necessary.
