Run Portable Ubuntu Linux Inside Windows

Run Portable Ubuntu Linux Inside WindowsSince I made Ubuntu as my main OS on my personal laptop, I always missed it when I'm at the office where I'm using Windows 7. Good thing I found the Portable Ubuntu. It is a Windows app that let you run Ubuntu as a portable Windows application which you can carry on your thumb drive. This portable system is built with the Colinux Kernel, Xming X server and Pulseaudio server for Windows. All you need to do is download the latest Portable Ubuntu package then unpack it to a folder.

The package is about 400MB+ in size. To run Portable Ubuntu on Vista or Windows 7, you'll have to open your command prompt as an administrator and for Windows XP, just launch a command prompt. Now go to folder where you extracted your Portable Ubuntu, then enter run_portable_ubuntu and hit Enter to launch the .bat script. Wait for the decompression to finish and unblock all if the system prompts for it.

Portable Ubuntu decompress package

After the package decompression, You will see a small, move-able menu bar on your desktop as shown below.

Windows treats Portable Ubuntu like any other program. You can close, resize or drag windows from your taskbar with no difference. Portable Ubuntu is a free portable application that runs on Windows systems only.
