The most wanted tool for any architect or designer is a structured diagrams software like the popular Microsoft Visio. If you can't afford Microsoft Visio then you might want to consider using a free opensource alternative program. A better Microsoft Visio alternative is Dia --a GTK+ based diagram creation program for GNU/Linux, Unix and Windows released under the GPL license. It can be used to draw many different kinds of diagrams which are supported in Visio.
It currently has special objects to help draw entity relationship diagrams, UML diagrams, flowcharts, network diagrams, and many other diagrams. It is also possible to add support for new shapes by writing simple XML files, using a subset of SVG to draw the shape.
Pretty much everything you can do in Visio you can do in DIA.
Ha, who CAN afford Visio? Dia is a decent alternative but progress and improvements seem almost non-existent the last couple years. Another one to keep an eye on is Lucidchart. It's free too and their development seems like it's at a rip-roaring pace. Almost to the point where I can stop paying for Visio altogether.
